Reform UK : Make Work Pay

Wednesday, 19 June 2024

There are many people who do not work. They don’t work for three reasons:

  1. Not Enough Jobs The economy is not growing because the government has destroyed every condition necessary for economic growth. They have destroyed growth with:
  • Net zero policies
  • High taxes
  • Heavy regulations
  • EU restrictions
  • Excessive red tape

The government has stifled the economy's growth potential by imposing too many constraints on businesses. This makes it almost impossible for them to grow. Consequently, there are fewer jobs available than there should be.

  1. The Poverty Trap The benefit system has created a poverty trap where people find themselves worse off by working. This means that if they go to work and earn money, they end up with less in their pocket.

As a result, they stay on benefits indefinitely, living in poverty. The only way to break out of the poverty trap is to make work pay. We propose raising the tax threshold to £20,000 so that nobody pays any tax until they earn £20,000.

This would make work pay and encourage people to return to the workforce. In turn, they can add more value to themselves, their families, and their communities.

  1. Dishonest Claimants Some people who could work don’t work because they are dishonest. They make fraudulent claims about ill health.

For instance, many more people have claimed they are unable to work due to "mental issues." These mental issues are sometimes undefinable, unprovable, and indisputable.

It is too easy for people to say, "I have anxiety, and therefore I cannot work," forcing the rest of society to pay their bills.

This loophole needs to be investigated and closed. We need face-to-face PIP (Personal Independence Payment) assessments to make it more difficult for people to feign disability.

Growth Economy Only with a growth economy can we afford brilliant public services. Therefore, to ensure everyone who should work does work, policies must make work rewarding and accessible.

If you agree with this, please let me know. Leave a comment.
